Wordpress General Settings Configuration Tutorial
Generally the general settings page changes for every different version of wordpress you install on your blog. The settings are very easy but very much important because these options are available only for blogs which are self-hosted and not for wordpress.com based free blogs.
The Moment you complete wordpress installation and you first login to your admin panel you will be directed to the General Settings page which you need to configure in order to get started.
The First step would be to assign a Blog Name to your wordpress blog, followed by a Tagline[description] which would be in around 5-10 words maximum because this appears in the header section of your blog under the title. Try to keep your Blog Title very short and relevant to your blogs domain name. Its recommended to use the same name you have in your domain name because people remember your blog’s based on the name.
The next thing would be to change your Wordpress address[URL] from http://makemoneynext.com to http://www.makemoneynext.com because in SEO terms its always recommended to have a www in the domain URL and it gives a little boost in your search engine rankings. You also need to redirect all your http:// readers to http://www using a permanent 301 redirect about which we will discuss in the later posts.
E-mail address section is the place where you need to enter your email in order to recieve email notifications when new comments are recieved, when new contact form emails are recieved etc.
The next section is Membership under which first option is : Anyone can register which means that you allow any of your visitor/reader to become a member of your blog and this way you can create a membership commmunity and also allow your members to make posts on your blog as contributors. For this setting you need to setup the next option under : New User Default Role you need to change the default value from Subscriber to Contributor or author.
Its generally not recommended to change any other settings on this page except the time zone if you are located in a place which is not in sync with the universal time. Click on Save Changes at the end of the page to save all the settings you have changed. You will be asked to relogin to your wordpress admin section and once you do that you will find that your blog’s URL are changed to http://www format. This completes our session on setting our wordpress General Settings page.
