What is Page Rank?

To simply define what page rank is we can say that it is a numerical value which is used to measure the relative importance of a particular web page with the internet. Larry Page and Sergey Brin are the founders of this phenomenon who developed it during a research they undertook for a new search engine. This new search engine is none other than Google. To truly appreciate the value of Page ranks we will have to understand their relevance to the World Wide Web.

It is no secret that all businesses operating on the internet are always on the lookout of improving their page rank with Google. Just like each area of business operation has its own do’s and don’ts this particular aspect of internet marketing is a must for businesses hoping to survive on the internet. The better your page ranks the more chances you have of getting people to view your website. The number that Google assigns to your particular page is stored in a secret algorithm which is what determines whether your page is ranked high or low when someone enters a search. It would however be incorrect to assume that the ranking of the page is the only thing that influences where your page will appear on the search results.

Google Page RankThose looking to determine ranking of their web page have a number of ways in which they can go about doing so. There are certain web browsers that will display the page rank data on their own and this is a very convenient way of finding out your page rankings. Secondly there are particular sites where you can get the page rankings by entering the url of the particular page. At times these page rankings are bound to be inaccurate. This is because they may not be displaying the current ratings which frequently keep on changing. This lag can occur for periods of over a couple of months.

In order to clearly understand how Google ranks the pages in its search results we must understand how the mechanism works in itself. First of all you must understand that this has to do with the ranking of pages not entire websites. Although the reputation of the website does have an impact on the ranking of each page it is not the determining factor as such. If you are looking to increase your page rank you have to take part in a popularity contest on the internet. Basically your page will be ranked according the popularity of the pages that are linked to you and the amount of links that you have on your page. This means that in order to increase your page rank you have to have more links that are popular. This effort should be coupled with a high number of links on your own site. Hence you can dramatically increase the ranking of your page by having links that are already popular linked to your web site.
